Routine Appointments

Telephone lines are open from 8:00am weekdays. It is recommended that you telephone the reception at 8:00am on the day you wish to be seen. We have a number of face to face and telephone appointments available.

You can contact us online to request a non-urgent appointment.

Urgent Appointments

If you feel you require an urgent appointment please telephone the practice on 01384 322400 from 8.00am and our staff will accommodate you where possible. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee same day appointments, but we do try and offer alternatives which include telephone consultations.

Acute Nurse Appointments

In a number of cases, your appointment will be with an Advanced Clinical Practioners (ACP), who can prescribe medication if required or a Physician’s Associate (PA) (non - prescriber) rather than a doctor. These clinicians are qualified to deal with many ailments and you may be seen/contacted more quickly.

Telephone Consultations

Many problems can be dealt with over the telephone. Doctors, Nurses, Physician Assistants will call you back at some point during the day. The call may come from a blocked number.

Home Visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible.

In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception on 01384 322400 before 11:00am, this will enable the clinicians to plan their work.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. The GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed.

GP Extended Hours

Extended hours are available in our local area which gives you the opportunity to see a GP or a nurse out of our core hours. There will be appointments available at:

  • The Ridgeway Surgery
  • Northway Medical Practice

  • Lower Gornal Medical Practice

The appointments will rotate around these practices during the week.

The extended hours appointment times are Monday to Friday 6:30pm – 8.00pm, Saturday 9:00am -12:00pm and Sunday 9:00am – 11:00am

To arrange an appointment call the surgery.

Pharmacy First Minor Ailments Scheme

Do you get your prescriptions for free? If so then local pharmacies are now able to see and prescribe for patients with minor ailments to save you having to attend the surgery.

For a list of the conditions that can be treated at your local pharmacy, please see the leaflet below:

Both the Lloyds pharmacies are participating in this service. You don’t need an appointment, just drop in and see them.

There are occasions when patients need to be assessed by a GP or Nurse which might involve intimate examinations.

This practice is committed to putting patients at ease whenever possible, and if you wish a chaperone to be present during your examination please do not hesitate to ask when you attend your appointment.

Interpreter Services

Any patient can request an interpreter if their first language is not English. This service should be requested when the appointment is booked.

Consent to Treatment

If you present at the practice for a booked appointment for a procedure (for example a vaccination) you will be deemed to have consented for treatment. In some cases, for instance minor surgery procedures, your signed consent is required.

Health Checks

You will be offered a health check when you join the practice. Any patients aged 16 –74 years who have not had a consultation within the last three years may request a consultation.

Patients 75 years and over who have not had a consultation within the last twelve months may request a health check with one of our practice team. If you are unable to attend the surgery, a home visit could be arranged.

Cancelling or changing an appointment

Please let us know by telephone or by replying to your text message if you are unable to attend, or no longer require an appointment that you have booked. This will give the opportunity to someone else to use this appointment.

By not contacting the surgery in advance it has the following effects:

  • An increase in the waiting time for appointments
  • Frustration for both staff and patients
  • A waste of resources
  • A potential risk to the health of the patient

If you do not attend a booked appointment without letting us know, you will receive a letter from us reminding you of our policy. If you DNA 3 times within a 12 month period you may be removed from the practice list and will have to find an alternative general practitioner.

You can also contact us online to let us know if you need to cancel or change your appointment.
